With its ferocious winds and flooding rains, it seemed almost as though it was blocked from moving inland, lingering along the coastline and causing catastrophic damage. Mike from Around the World, in his interview with Pastor Paul Begley, emphasized the immense impact this storm had, particularly in areas like Asheville, North Carolina, where many were caught off guard.
Mike shared that high-pressure systems played a critical role in keeping the storm from veering inward. These systems essentially trapped the hurricane along the coastline, and while some feared the worst was over, the reality was much harsher. The hurricane not only devastated large cities but also remote regions, where roads were washed away and entire communities were isolated. In many areas, such as Asheville, recovery efforts are moving slowly. Communication has been limited, leaving residents without access to vital resources, and some estimates suggest that the death toll could exceed 1,000.
As Mike explained, “People are still stuck in the mud, and rescuers can hear their screams. It’s an absolute disaster.” Asheville’s terrain made it particularly vulnerable to flash floods, with many residents unable to escape before the storm hit. Despite military and civilian efforts to deliver aid, entire sections of the city remain cut off, with supplies needing to be delivered on foot in some places.
The news reports initially listed 215 casualties, but as feedback from people on the ground emerges, it's clear that the devastation is much worse. Black Mountain, a part of Asheville, has been severely impacted, with Mike noting that the area may not recover for years. Mike criticized the lack of immediate government intervention, highlighting that the federal government’s slow response in assisting disaster-stricken areas is unacceptable. “When a city goes through something like this, all external operations should be suspended, and efforts should focus solely on those affected,” he stated. Despite the severity of the situation, many communities feel neglected, with supplies and aid often delayed or poorly distributed.
One of the more troubling revelations was that private citizens trying to bring supplies were often turned away due to safety concerns. Mike explained that many people who ventured into the disaster zones to offer help went missing or got into trouble themselves. As a result, authorities have restricted access, fearing that well-meaning individuals could fall victim to the dangerous conditions. The challenge now is to reach the most isolated areas, where residents are running out of time.

As tensions rise and conflicts deepen, we ask for Your protection over Israel, the people of Palestine, and all those in the surrounding nations. Father, You hold the future in Your hands, and we pray that You bring peace to this region, which has long been torn by strife. Lord, we also bring before You the devastation caused by the recent hurricanes. So many lives have been turned upside down, homes destroyed, and families displaced. A Recommendation
When a Christian people feel themselves to be overtaken by a great public calamity, it becomes them to humble themselves under the dispensation of Divine Providence, to recognize His righteous government over the children of men, to acknowledge His goodness in time past, as well as their own unworthiness, and to supplicate His merciful protection for the future.
The death of William Henry Harrison, late President of the United States, so soon after his elevation to that high office, is a bereavement peculiarly calculated to be regarded as a heavy affliction and to impress all minds with a sense of the uncertainty of human things and of the dependence of nations, as well as individuals, upon our Heavenly Parent.
I have thought, therefore, that I should be acting in conformity with the general expectation and feelings of the community in recommending, as I now do, to the people of the United States of every religious denomination that, according to their several modes and forms of worship, they observe a day of fasting and prayer by such religious services as may be suitable on the occasion; and I recommend Friday, the 14th day of May next, for that purpose, to the end that on that day we may all with one accord join in humble and reverential approach to Him in whose hands we are, invoking Him to inspire us with a proper spirit and temper of heart and mind under these frowns of His providence and still to bestow His gracious benedictions upon our Government and our country.
