As a 9-year-old I was fascinated with magic and purchased a book about renowned magician Harry Houdini. Houdini was most famous for his escape acts, but I wanted to learn about his magic tricks? How could show an elephant on stage and suddenly make it disappear?
The secret behind this trick is no longer hidden. Google “disappearing elephant” and you can quickly learn how Houdini dazzled the crowds time and again. Part of the answer relates to a frequently used phrase today—“smoke and mirrors.”

There is widespread concern, even deep-seated fear, that the America we have known is on the brink disappearing from its historic position as a beacon of strength and power. The signs can no longer be ignored.
Two questions for you. First, can you identify specific areas where our freedoms are disappearing? Hint: one obvious area pertains to our rights under the First Amendment of our Constitution. Citizens are regularly being jailed and sued for merely expressing an opinion. Secondly, how can we turn this negative trend around? Is there still hope for our country and, if so, what steps need to be followed?
The damaging changes that have taken place in American life and society over the past three to four years are stunning. What hasn’t changed is our our failure to learn from history. In his 1948 speech to the House of Commons, Winston Churchill warned: “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
Americans are not alone in failing to learn from the past. If the history of mankind has proven anything, it is that every civilization up to the present has failed to apply its history lessons. And no doubt, this trend will continue for every nation on earth to include the US unless we get smarter.
An example from the history of Israel illustrates this truth. “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit (Judges 21:25). Sometime around 1350 BC Joshua, the military leader of Israel, died. For twenty-five years Joshua had led the Israelites to many victories over surrounding nations. In a speech to the tribal leaders, he challenged them to complete the work and take possession of the land the Lord had promised them.
Didn’t happen. Why? As verse 21:25 tells us, the people failed to learn from their history. Instead, they did what they considered was right in their own eyes. Israel continued this pattern and eventually went into exile. It’s important to understand that this downward path didn’t happen overnight—it took centuries.
Current events, coupled with biblical prophecy, indicate that time is running out. The United States doesn’t have centuries. We may not have decades or even a full generation. The unity which once characterized our republic no longer exists. We’re splintered with increasing numbers claiming they want America to fail and be replaced with a socialistic or even a communist style of government.

Chaplain (Col.) Scott McChrystal was commissioned in 1970 and served 31 years on active duty, 10 as an infantry officer and the remainder as a United States Army chaplain. His line officer experience included a tour in Vietnam as an Infantry Platoon Leader and three assignments with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His final assignment was as the senior chaplain at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He retired from active duty in 2005 and served as the Military/VA Representative and Endorser within the Chaplaincy Department for the General Council of the Assemblies of God from 2005-2019. His decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Award, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, and the Army Ranger Tab. His education includes a Master of Business Administration Degree, a Master of Divinity Degree, a Doctor of Ministry Degree, and graduation from The United States Army War College. In recent years, he and his wife have written several Christian devotionals. In addition, Scott co-authored a Christian action-novel and served as the managing editor for the The Warrior’s Bible, an application Bible for the military community. He presently serves as the Executive Liaison for The Warrior’s Journey, a non-profit organization that supports the military community. He’s also a member of the Distinguished Advisory Board for Battle Ready Ministries. He and his wife, Judy, live in Springfield, Missouri, and have 4 children and 12 grandchildren.
